A specialist SEN school for secondary aged boys with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs

The Food Technology curriculum at LWS is designed to promote independent cooking skills. Students across all year groups will have a theory and practical lesson each week, which will enable them to improve their understanding around food and healthy food choices, regardless of their starting point. The first topics covered are designed to promote students confidence around the cooking environment, and their interest in trying a variety of ingredients. Students will learn basic cooking skills, and will learn about the food groups using the Eatwell Guide. As they progress through the school, topics become more focused and will cover chocolate cookery, rice and pasta dishes and using kitchen gadgets safely.
In Year 9, students will begin study for GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition. They will improve their understanding of how of British food traditions have developed, as well as their awareness of international cuisine. Throughout the course, students will learn about Food Commodities, Principles of Nutrition, Diet and Good Health, The Science of Food, Where Food Comes From and Food Preparation. Students will have a written exam (50% of overall qualification), as well as a food investigation assessment (15% of overall qualification) and a food preparation assessment (35% of overall qualification).
